MAJOR NEW RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT AT THE NORTHERN ENTRANCE TO CITY CENTRE
Big Picture Developments have lodged a planning application for a major new residential development to act as a landmark for the northern gateway to Belfast’s city centre. It is anticipated that ‘The Lighthouse’ scheme will create a catalyst for the regeneration of this previously neglected area.
The Lighthouse is a highly innovative scheme that creates an iconic building for the northern side of the city centre. This exciting development will sit at the pivotal junction of Great St George’s Street and Nelson Street where the M2 & M3 slip roads converge - defining this important entry point to Belfast’s commercial core.
The Lighthouse offers 236 large apartments designed around an interior landscaped courtyard. High quality homes of mixed sizes which will also accord with the affordable housing provision by the Department for Social Development.
The site is designated as a Development Opportunity site in the new draft Belfast Metropolitan Area Plan 2015 and lies within the Laganside and North Docks character area.
This area has suffered much neglect as new roads were built and the city centre was being re-cast over the last thirty years. The Lighthouse will bring major regeneration to the area and represents a £20M investment, creating several hundred construction jobs during the building phase.
RPP Architects have designed the scheme.
